Pediatric Anesthesia specializes in caring for surgery on critically ill infants and children. This includes children with complications related to being born prematurely, as well as congenital heart, spine, and brain or neurologic defects. While all anesthesiologists are trained to treat and provide various types of anesthesia to children, Pediatric Anesthesiologists are unique in that they have received additional fellowship training specifically aimed at these unique problems. Also, Pediatric Anesthesiologists are adept at using regional anesthesia techniques when appropriate, to minimize the pain that children have after an operation.
